Those Darlins - Wild One

I was blessed with witnessing my second Those Darlins show last night… I love them! : )

2010 is here!

I’m gonna try to update more often, even if just to track my actions.  These five weeks off school have been absolutely flying by - three down, two to go.

I spent the first two saying goodbye to one of my closest friends, who just jumped a flight to Southern Cali.  I’ve been helping her pack and organize, discussing plans for a new life…the enormity of such a huge life change can never be realized until you’re living the new life, and by that point, looking back just slows down the process of moving forward.

Now, my time has shifted to music.  Matt Carter Band has been rehearsing nightly to prepare for recording with local legend Adam Schmitt.  We’re making the effort to record as much of the album live.  I’m excited to hear the result…recording live makes for a real band effort.  I’m accustomed to building albums a track at a time, so good or bad, this will be a memorable experience.

I’m also getting the ball rolling with a new project with Shay, my roommate and former Sangamon bandmate, and Kayla Brown and myself are producing a few tracks for her upcoming solo album.  My goal for 2010 is to produce, or perform, on at least four releases. : )

Sickness : (

Everybody’s sick.  I performed at a ‘tent-party’ show last Friday in a wet 40 degrees that left me in a world of sickness.  I missed a friend’s wedding on Saturday and had to cancel my Sunday plans.  I had been eating about 10 Vitamin C drops a day for the weeks leading up to this, but still, one cold, rainy night and I’m struggling for a week.  My only motivation since Friday has come from the thought of finishing my work for the day to return to my couch.  I have a big show (for me) in Chicago tomorrow…here’s to getting healthy quick!

Music, school, blah…

Music is my constant…I know alot of people say that, so it’s really no biggie, but I realize that I give music so much of my thought that it usually keeps me from investing too much of my thought into other things, or people.  Yes, I know that when I get fired, dumped, robbed, kicked, etc…, I’ll be able to lose my mind on a drumset, or track down some great music, and smile again.

So much has been changing for me lately.  Change, in general, is typically a fun thing and it usually leads us to becoming better, stronger, more interesting people.  I feel like I’m beginning to become somewhat more selfish lately.  Note: This is coming from someone who has ‘taken one for the team’ his whole life, so I’m not exactly destroying any lives here; but, I am starting to realize what I want in life, and finding ways to personally achieve these goals.

In the last few weeks, I went through the gruesome process of getting back into the University of Illinois.  Academically, (I’ll come out and say it) I feel like a complete fuckup.  I started my undergraduate education in 1999.  Comically, U of I has become an even better institution than when I went there…I squeezed in as a transfer student in 2001, there’s no chance I would have been accepted by today’s standards, but if I finish my last four classes with a ‘B’ average, I’ll be wearing a cap and gown…joke of my life : )

Ballpoint Pen Drawing by Juan Francisco Casas…

They may look like pin-sharp photographs - but these amazing pictures are actually drawings created with the humble ballpoint pen. The stunning pictures, measuring up to 10ft high, were drawn by Juan Francisco Casas. Casas, 31, can use up to four 14p ballpoint pens for a canvas. Formerly a traditional painter, Juan began the drawings three years ago based on photographs of nights out with his friends.
[Casas] admires the “simplicity” of the ballpoint pen, invented in 1938 by Hungarian Laszlo Biro. Casas said: “I guess it started off as a joke, to try and make something so realistic that people would think is a photo. I also wanted to create it with something that everyone has - a Biro. I don’t think it has ever been done before. For me it’s not that different from painting. I was trying to show that it doesn’t matter what material you use, it’s what you do with it.” The only drawback is that he can’t erase any errors. He said: “Mistakes are the main problem. It’s better if I make them at the beginning.” (via)

This is on the fourth floor of the University & Goodwin parking garage. Lately, I’ve been making this garage a destination for my rides…it’s a better workout to ride the incline and riding laps around the top level is serene; being alone, overlooking the city, on a bike. If you notice, the guitar is a Guitar Hero controller…I’d love to know more about this?
